In our Meals in the Microwave series, we talked about different breakfast, lunch and dinner recipes that can be prepared in the microwave. In this post, we will share a kids-friendly microwave recipe.
Before we start, let’s talk about safety tips. Even though microwaves have no open flame, it can still cause heat-related burn injuries. As a result, it is always important to follow safety precautions.
Microwave Safety Tips
- Discuss microwave safety rules with your children.
- Supervise children until you are confident that they know how to use the microwave safely.
Microwave Oven Safe Symbol
- Use only microwave-safe containers.
- Make sure the container is labeled safe for microwave use.
- For microwavable food such as steamed vegetables, carefully follow the directions on the package.
- Remain in the kitchen while cooking with the microwave to avoid spillage.
- Be careful when removing foods from the microwave.
- Use oven mitts or other tools to avoid burns.
- Avoid doing it while small children are underfoot.
Microwave Cooking Tips

- Cover food when cooking in the microwave to retain moisture.
- Stir and rotate food often while cooking to heat evenly.
- Cut food into similar sizes to ensure even cooking.
- Use a food thermometer to check doneness.
- For cooking, refer to our post on Food Handling Safety for more information on temperature danger zone and the proper temperatures for cooking meat.

please give me some advise, that which material should I use in microwave plastic, glass or some other material?
Hi! Thank you for reaching out. Glass container is almost always microwave safe unless there are metal trims. If anything contain metal, don’t put it in the microwave. Some plastic containers (but not all) can be used in microwave. If they have a microwave safe label at the bottom, they can be microwaved.
