What fun facts do you know about cabbage? Just in-case you are as stumped as I was prior to doing a little research, here is a list of fun facts!

  • Cabbage comes from the plant family Cruciferae and is closely related to broccoli, cauliflower, kale, and Brussel spouts. 
  • The word ‘cabbage’ comes from the Latin word ‘caput,’ meaning ‘head’
  • Cabbage dates back at least 4,000 years
  • Cabbage grows most actively in New York from June to October
  • Babe Ruth kept a cabbage leaf under his hat during baseball games
  • Cabbage can be red, purple, or green, and over 100 varieties of cabbage exist
  • The largest known cabbage was 123 pounds
  •  Cabbage is found in many cultures and countries, most commonly in Russia, Ireland, and China
  • Cabbage is a good source of dietary fiber, vitamin K, B6, and folate. It is an excellent source of vitamin C.
  • Cabbage is 90% water

 

Now that we know a little bit more about cabbage, let’s look at a delicious cabbage recipe that we think you and your family will enjoy.

Cabbage Stir-Fry

Ingredients:

2 teaspoons vegetable oil
1 cup sliced celery
1 cup chopped onion
3 cups shredded or chopped cabbage
½ cup chopped green pepper
½ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon pepper
1 medium tomato, chopped
Directions:
  1. Wash hands with soap and water.
  2. Heat oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat (350 degrees F in an electric skillet).
  3. Add celery and onion. Cook 4 to 7 minutes until soft.
  4. Add cabbage, green pepper, salt and pepper. Cook for 5 to 10 minutes, stirring often so the cabbage sweats.
  5. Add tomato just before serving.
  6. Refrigerate leftovers within 2 hours.
