For many, Mother’s Day is one of the most important days of the year. It is a chance to celebrate a parent, grandparent, or another maternal figure in your life. This year, Mother’s Day is Sunday, May 9th! While many people choose to go out to eat, staying in can be a great opportunity to spend time together.
In our previous posts, Cooking with Kids: Getting Involved in the Kitchen Part I and Part II, we discussed hands-on activities that kids can do in the kitchen. As detailed in the series, the tasks kids can handle depend on their age. The following recipes can be used for a Mother’s Day brunch. With adult supervision, kids can get involved in the cooking process.
A Recipe for Younger Children
This first recipe is a quick and simple fruit and yogurt parfait. Kids can help wash the berries, add the yogurt to the cups, and top them with granola.
Yogurt and Fruit Parfaits
Serves 4
Ingredients:
- 3 cups vanilla nonfat yogurt
- 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries
- 2 cups fresh or frozen blackberries, raspberries, or blueberries
- 1 cup granola

A Recipe for Older Children
The next recipe is for a savory breakfast dish: baked ham and egg cups. This dish takes a little more time but can be a fun activity to do with kids. For this recipe, kids can divide the ham, sprinkle the cheese, and crack the eggs with adult supervision.
Baked Ham and Egg Cups
Serves 6
Ingredients:
- 12 slices ham
- 1/2 cup shredded cheese (Swiss or cheddar)
- 6 large eggs
- 6 tablespoons dairy milk
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh chives
Directions
- Preheat the oven to 400 °F.
- Stack 2 slices of ham directly on top of each other and fit into a muffin tin to form a cup. Repeat with the remaining ham.
- Dividing evenly, sprinkle half of the cheese into the bottoms of the ham cups.
- Crack an egg into each and add 1 tablespoon of milk.
- Add in the rest of the cheese. Salt and pepper the egg mixture to taste.
- Bake until the egg whites are set, and the yolks are still soft, 20 to 24 minutes, rotating the baking sheet halfway.
- Sprinkle with the chives and then carefully lift the ham cups out of the muffin tin.
