In fall 2014, student teams in CRP 2000 created podcasts on topics ranging from Edible Urbanism to Smart Cities. These are a couple of examples.
In Search of the City Edible
In this podcast, we endeavor to explore what a viable 21st-century food movement should look like. How do we reconcile the inequities present in existing approaches to sustainability in our food system, while addressing the needs and rights of the community, in the present and in the future? How do we utilize existing frameworks, while simultaneously deconstructing their intrinsic privilege, to cultivate a food culture that is just and ecologically sound? In the absence of mechanisms for active citizen engagement, how can planners utilize food and agriculture to encourage community—an asset that will itself provide a new movement with lasting momentum? Using Ithaca as our case study, we examine the some of the work that is being done to expand the movement for food justice to encompass low-income residents, communities of color, and kids of all ages. Featuring commentary from leaders of the Southside Community Center and Youth Farm Project, we explore how incorporating food systems into planning practice can serve as a vehicle for promoting social justice and building a healthier and more resilient community.
