For this week I selected a song called Exit West by Irmin Schmidt. The song does not have any words and has a strange somber melodic progression. The first half of Exit West provides us with a glimpse into a war-ridden sexist society seemingly devoid of freedom. The tone of this song nicely matches the tone of our reading thus far.

Thanks for this choice, Raven!
As a composer, Irmin Schmidt is interesting – he is deeply ensconced within experimental music, which makes me think about this song more in terms of its “wacky” melodies, for lack of a better word. The melodic progress is, as you noted, somber, but it seems to turn a few shades lighter towards the second half of the piece. Perhaps this mirrors the progression in Exit West?
