Kaltura Basics

What is Kaltura?

Kaltura is Cornell’s Video on Demand service. It enables any faculty or staff member to upload, edit, manage and host videos, images and audio files.  It also provides a hosted presence or an embedded code to stream videos at a web venue of your choice.

Uploaded files are automatically converted into multiple formats, so you won’t need any additional plugins or software to view or insert videos on course sites.

When might I use Kaltura?

  • To create quick videos highlighting a particular topic
  • To create video content to embed in sites such as Blackboard, Canvas, or etest
  • To upload videos from a mobile device
  • To store videos
  • To provide video feedback on assignments in your Learning Management System (LMS)

How do I access Kaltura?

VOD login

  • Open a browser visit Video on Demand
  • Click on the “User” icon in upper right hand corner, a drop down menu will appear.
  • Select “Login”
  • Sign in with your Cornell NetID and password
    • Be sure to have your mobile device handy for Two-Step Login

How do I upload a video?

Media Upload

  • Select “+ Add New”
  • Select “Media Upload”
  • Choose a file to upload from your device
  • Fill in the video information fields
    • Be sure to complete the “Name” and “Permissions” fields

How do I record a video in Kaltura?

Media Upload

  • Select “+ Add New”
  • Select “Webcam Recording”

What are the recommended video settings?

All common video, audio and image formats in all resolutions are accepted. For the best video results, Cornell recommends uploading videos in 1280×720 pixels and using the H.264 video codec at about 4000 kb/s.

 

How do I edit a video in Kaltura?

  • Select “My Media”
  • Find the video you wish to trim
  • Select “Edit”
  • Click on “Launch Editor”
  • Trim by clicking and dragging the handlebar at either the beginning or the end of the video to the desired start/stop point

What are Channels? 

Channels are one way that users can organize the videos they post to video on demand. Channels can be individual or shared, open or moderated, and public or private. Users can create channels around any topic.

To create a channel:

  • Click on “Channels” in upper left hand corner of your screen.
  • Click on “Create Channel” (located on right side).

  • Give your new channel a name and select your privacy settings.
