Hybrid Lectures: Recording a session with in-person and remote students

Currently, Zoom provides a way to deliver content concurrently to both in-person and remote students.  This post describes the current technical best practices to both deliver and record your lecture from a CVM lecture hall. Pre-Pandemic lecture recordings captured the lecture as it was given for later viewing.  Interacting with and including remote students as part of the class experience and being able to capture that requires different tools.

How to Record a Session with Remote Students from an In Person Teaching Space

  1. Schedule your lecture using the zoom interface in canvas. Learn how to schedule zoom here.
  2. Log in to Canvas from one of the lecture hall podium computers.
  3. Begin the zoom session.
    1. Confirm that the room microphone is being picked up by zoom (if during the audio test you do not see a signal, select a different microphone — In LH 4 /5 the correct choice is Crestron 420 but unfortunately there at two with the same name so you may need to switch).
  4. If you can use the lecture hall computer to deliver the lecture, open your presentation and share your screen from the lecture hall computer.  If you wish to present from your computer please join the zoom meeting from your laptop WITHOUT CONNECTING IT TO THE AV SYSTEM and sharing your screen. Doing this keeps the room audio connected to the lecture hall computer and captures audio (including the audience microphones).

Questions

  • Can I connect my laptop to the room audio system?
    • No, connecting your computer to the AV system and running the zoom meeting from it will require you to use just the laptop microphone as the audio source and will work only when you are close to the laptop.  It will not pick up any audience questions.
  • Can I use presenter mode from my laptop?
    • No, using presenter mode from your laptop is not an option in this scenario because you will only have a single display.  But there is a very clever way around that by using PowerPoint presenter view with one screen. Read more about this solution here.

Tips

  • Remember to encourage audience microphone use.
  • Practice makes perfect, feel free to contact the ESS team to schedule a practice session.
