Schedule Zoom Sessions, Classes, and Meeting through Canvas
How to Schedule a Zoom Meeting on Canvas
Please go through your course Canvas site to schedule all zoom sessions. This will ensure they appear on students’ calendar.
Step 1: Confirm Zoom is enabled on your course site
If you can see ‘zoom’ in the left hand navigation menu it is enabled. If not, follow the steps below to enable it.
How to enable zoom in Canvas
- Click “Settings”
- Click the tab labeled “Navigation”
- Click and drag the box labeled “Zoom” up to the region that is visible to students
- Scroll down to the bottom of the page and SAVE!
Step 2: Schedule your Meeting(s)
1. Click ‘Zoom’ in the left hand navigation menu
2. Click “Schedule a New Meeting”
3. Enter the name, description, date, time, and duration of your meeting
4. If you have a recurring lecture or activity (i.e. lecture every Monday at the time specified in Step 2c), select “Recurring Meeting,” Recurrence “Weekly,” Occurs on “Monday,” End date “After __ occurrences.”
Note: If you have lecture from 9-10 on Monday and 9-10 on Tuesday, you can select both Monday and Tuesday and set the appropriate recurrences. However, if you have lecture from 9-10 on Monday and 3-4 on Tuesday, you must do this process twice, one for Monday 9-10 recurring and one for Tuesday 3-4 recurring.
5. Select “On” for Host and Participant Video so that this is automatically on when people join
6. Select “Both” for Audio
7. Click “Enable join before host” to allow your students to join the Zoom meeting before you get there.
8. Click “Mute participants upon entry” so that students are automatically muted when they join the meeting. This is especially useful for large groups so that excess background noise is avoided.
9. Click “Record the meeting automatically in the cloud”.
10. Click SAVE!
To Start your Zoom Meeting from Canvas
- Click “Zoom” from the navigation menu inside your course
- Click “Upcoming Meetings”
- Find the meeting you’d like to start and click “Start”
As with other Canvas content it is necessary to publish your recording before it is available to students. This is done from the “Cloud Recordings” tab of the Canvas Zoom Section.
Once published, students view the recordings through the same interface.
