Using Rubrics in Canvas

Create a Rubric

  1. Create the assignment to which you wish to associate the rubric first
  2. Open the assignment
  3. Click “+Rubric” button

Customizing the Default Rubric

  1. When you click “+Rubric” you will see a default rubric, like the one above
  2. Give your rubric a descriptive title
  3. Click the pencil icon to edit an existing criteria,or click “+Criterion” to create
    1. You may enter a short and long description for each criterion
  4. Edit the points values and descriptions of each rating possible for each criterion, click the pencil icon to edit an existing criterion
  5. Select the check boxes corresponding to how you want to use the rubric
    1. Free form comments – disables specific rating for each criterion
    2. Remove points – allows you to select a rating but does not list any points overall or for specific criterion.  If you remove points, you will not have the option to use the rubric for grading.
    3. Don’t post to learning mastery – is only relevant if you are using the Learning Mastery Gradebook
    4. Use this rubric for grading – will allow you to mark and write comments for each criterion right in speed grader.  This is a highly recommended time saver!
    5. Hide score total for assessment results – show individual criterion scores but does not tally the rubric
  6. Click “Create Rubric”
    1. Note: if the total points possible in the rubric is different than the points value you assigned to the assignment, you will be given a warning and be able to update the assignment to reflect the rubric you just made.
