Shelby Haley ’22 has been recognized by the American Society for Horticulture Science (ASHS) as a 2021 Outstanding Undergraduate Horticulture Student. ASHS selects students based on their leadership, service, and campus activities, as well as their academic achievements.
Shelby has been active with Hortus Forum, Cornell’s undergraduate horticulture club, where she coordinated the club’s social media engagement and is now the club’s president. “When the pandemic hit, we thought on our feet and held a huge end-of-semester sale and a plant donation to Ithaca Children’s Garden,” she recalls. “This year our officer team really stepped up and found a way to run a full year of Cornell-approved, in-person events, while also facilitating a vegetable plant donation drive to different community garden organizations across Ithaca.” Shelby plans to study urban agriculture and pursue a career in academia or extension work.
ASHS also recognized four Cornell undergraduates as 2021 ASHS Collegiate Scholars: Elise Boisvert, Lindsay Brown, Grace Hageman, and Vanessa Lau. This award honors the academic achievements of junior and senior horticulture undergraduates who are in the top 15% of their class.
In other end-of-the-semester recognitions, Vanessa Lau received the Kenneth Post Award, which recognizes an outstanding senior in Plant Sciences. And Jonah Helmer received the Henry Schenkel Jr. Memorial Fund Award which recognizes an outstanding sophomore or junior in Plant Sciences.
