August 11: Plant Science Renovation Update (bathroom, mail, access)

Ground floor bathroom: The men’s bathroom on Plant Science ground floor is being switched to women’s bathroom. Signage has been changed (see photo).

Ground floor mailroom (G21): Custodians have been relocated to G21. Mail is temporarily being delivered to 137 Plant Science (Marvin Pritt’s former office). Please contact Catalina Enright in 135 Plant Science if you are unable to find your mailbox. The printer that was formerly in G21 is offline.

Access changes: Doors from the east side of Plant Science to the central stairway, Minns Garden entrance, and Ag Quad entrance are for emergency exit only. An alarm will sound if these doors are opened.

Construction hours: Most of the construction activities will happen between 6 am and 3:30 pm, Building Trades Union hours. There may be times when they’ll need to work later to address unique situations but generally, they’ll be gone from the construction zone by 4 pm.

Updates from FCS Engineering & Project Management

Progress Report

  • The first Construction Trailer has been installed.
  • Site and detours signage are in place.
  • Posting for upcoming Asbestos Abatement activities will be done on August 11
  • Mechanical, Electricals & Plumbing subcontractors have begun selective shutdowns, cutting and capping.
  • Installation of temporary Fire Alarms is ongoing.
  • Review of the Controls has been completed.
  • The temporary construction partitions and doors have been installed. The alarms on the doors will be activated by end of day on August 11
  • Planning for the relocation of the RO/DI system is ongoing.

Two-week look ahead

  • Installation of the second Construction Trailer is scheduled for August 14
  • Cutting and capping of the Sprinkler system is scheduled to begin on August 14
  • Heating Hot water draining and capping are tentatively scheduled for August 15
  • Glycol draining, cutting, and capping are tentatively scheduled for August 16
  • Chilled Water draining, cutting, and capping are tentatively scheduled for August 17 – 18
  • Cutting and capping of the sprinkler system is scheduled to begin on August 14
  • Asbestos abatement will begin on August 21

Upcoming shut-downs

  • No utility shutdowns have been scheduled for the next two weeks.

Potential occupant disruptions

Egress/Ingress changes

  • Public access to the building via the North Entrance (Ag Quad side) and the South Entrance (off Tower Road, directly opposite Minns Garden) have been blocked and will remain blocked for the duration of the construction.

Parking disruptions

  • Reserved parking for the Red Hort Truck has been relocated to the parking area near the Plant Science Building loading dock.

Major deliveries

  • The delivery of the second construction trailer is will be made on August 14. No disruptions to traffic flow are expected.
