SPCA Week 6

It is crazy that this was our last trip of the semester. Orientation week seems like it was a week ago. Each semester seems to go by faster and faster. It was nice to see all the cats one last time before the end of this semester. I have gotten much better at dealing with cats than I was at the beginning of the semester. Hopefully I can work with the dogs next semester.

SPCA Week 5

After 5 weeks, I have figured out that the room in the back of the cat wing is my favorite room. There are three small cats, and they are all very shy, but as I spend more time with them, they become more and more friendly. At first, they were very reluctant to play with their toys in front of me, but now they seem to go about their business as they would if I wasn’t in the room. I also noticed that the SPCA has a pretty good reggae playlist with a bunch of Bob Marley and Jimmy Cliff songs that they play in the rooms at night.

SPCA Week 4

I am definitely getting more and more used to dealing with cats considering that I have always been a dog person. They have much different temperaments, but I enjoy spending time with them. That being said, there was this one cat that I thought I was getting along with well until he meowed and clawed me. It is hard to tell if they are being playful or if they are angry. The trick they told us about looking at their ears helps, but I still feel like I never know.

SPCA Week 3

Now that my schedule is finally settled (I had to switch a bunch of classes), my weekly routine is finally regular. Our trips to the SPCA offer a nice break from studying every other Tuesday. It is good to feel settled in for the semester with a solid routine.

SPCA Week 2

Even though it was only the second week we actually volunteered at the SPCA, I already felt like a local. The staff was very helpful in getting us into the routine. Our name-tags were all taken care of and hanging by the sign in computer with the rest of the volunteers. They do a good job of making our jobs as volunteers easy, which is very nice.

Orientation and Training SPCA

I was excited to volunteer at the SPCA after the orientation and training sessions at the beginning of the semester. The staff was very friendly, welcoming and informative. They provided us with a lot of helpful information, including a volunteer manual with their mission statement and all kinds of great details about the SPCA, including adopting guidelines. I have to say I would have been very tempted to try to adopt one of the older dogs there if we were allowed to have them in our dorm rooms.  Their dedication to the animals is truly inspiring.

First SPCA Trip

This Tuesday was our group’s first trip to SPCA.  The staff there was very welcoming and appreciative that we were there to volunteer, which was really nice.  Them being so friendly is definitely going to make our experience working there much more pleasant.  I was talking to someone at the front desk about possibly doing dog training on the side because I thought the dog wing volunteering was on Thursdays and that was why we couldn’t do it.  It turns out they take dog volunteers every day, so I was wondering if I could work in the dog wing instead of the cat wing.  I don’t dislike cats, but I am a huge dog person, so I would definitely enjoy working there a lot more if I could work in the dog wing.  They said the training was a little bit more specific, but I’m hoping if I do it on my own time I can just work in the dog wing from now on during my shifts.  They were fine with me doing that as long as I go through the proper training.

House Fellow Meet and Greet 9/4/19

I thought the Meet and Greet was a fun event and a great way to meet some of the house fellows.  Not only did I meet some cool and interesting people, but the event was also great practice for networking.  At first, the speed dating structure seemed strange, but it definitely allowed us to talk to a lot of different people, and I ended up having some awesome conversations with some of the house fellows.  Unfortunately, we were not able to talk to everyone because there was not enough time, but it was still a great experience.  After attending this event, I am really excited to be a part of the Rose Scholars Program and for a great year!
