A Refreshing, Interesting Dinner Conversation

This week I attended the first Table Talk with GRF Tom. Rather than focusing on one specific topic, the discussion was more freeform — we learned about Tom’s background and explored each other’s viewpoint of various current events. Amongst the attendees, there was a wide range of viewports represented — whether that be in terms of background, field of study, or level of knowledge in certain areas. It was interesting to have an open discussion about

We focused much of the discussion contrasting the American viewpoint with that of other countries, speaking on everything from cultural norms to patriotism and the recent protests in Hong Kong. It was interesting to see what unique experience or perspective each attendee brought to the discussion, whether that be from personal travel, family connections, or documentaries/news. Given that Tom had spent a significant amount of time in Asia (specifically Japan and recently China), it was fascinating to hear a firsthand account of how Americans are perceived in China. By subsequently contrasting that with the Americanized view of China, we were able to get into an interesting discussion about cultural differences, variances in governments, and the degree to which media and education affect these ideas. In an otherwise hectic week, it was refreshing to interact with individuals with experiences and interests that differ from my own. I was able to learn from others’ experience and expand my own understanding of topics that are often untouched by everyday conversations amongst busy students.
