The article presents an interesting case for how Twitter’s revamped ranking algorithm for content presentation has contributed to its steady increase in user activity over the past few quarters. For instance, the algorithm gathers tweets and activities of people followed by the user and scores them with a relevance model that predicts how interesting the tweet may be to the user. Some factors that affect the relevance model are recency, topic content, and user engaging with the source of the tweet.
It is interesting to see that what we learned in class with regards to Google’s PageRank algorithm (with hub and authority scores for each node) can have parallels with the ranking algorithm used by Twitter, where scores now are influenced by a multitude of factors and are updated in a similar fashion according to user activity.
