Be Careful, You Are Targeted.
Start at a certain point, I found there’s always some sections on every website that I visited with some consumer products that I viewed online recently. This type of new web advertisement is called “targeted advertisement”. Make people receiving advertisements based on previous actions or purchases is a new trend of advertisement, which retargets customers with relative information about things that they used to be interested in. This advertisement style could be benefit for both the customers for getting promotion information from stuffs that they are interested in and the retailers for selling more. However one might be questioning: how do those advertisement slots gather relative information of which ones to put in the advertisement?
The answer is through a collection of the customer’s personal information. Based on information about individual customer behaviors, attitudes, demographic, and finances, marketers are able to deliver advertising messages targeted to individual customer profiles and needs. Geographic information is drawn from computer’s IP address. Demographic information could be taken from profile data provided by user to any website. Behavioral information is gathered by tracking of consumers’ activities online, including searches did, web sites visited, and content viewed. All of these methods raise a concern about privacy. Since this technology is relatively new, there’re little regulations on trading user information. Therefore, you should be careful about what to put on the Internet. Most people would check the box “I agree with the above user term” without even reading the lengthy document. However, there might exist some information about how the web site is going to handle your personal information! Therefore, Ask yourself before filling a personal profile on any website: have you read the disclosure agreement?
