Networks: A Universal Structure

by Hectic –

The network is the ultimate unifying structure of existence. Although inherently abstract in nature, the breakdown of nodes and connections can beautifully illustrate even the most sublime of phenomena. From subway systems to neural connections, the structures of interconnection can be mapped in parallel to detect underlying patterns otherwise unbeknownst to the experts. [http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-18072627]. The traffic that flows through these networks can be measured and compared to generate data. From this data, specialized data miners and expert statisticians can present meaningful significant analysis which, when well-presented, allows executives make calculated data-driven decisions.

From this refreshingly-young paradigm in epistemology, a chorus of new discoveries have emerged. The application of this data-collecting methodology to structures of randomness and interdependence of action offer promising mathematical implications in fields varying from as far as commodity investing to quantum mechanics. These network structures become entities in of themselves, generated by rational decisions and forces of nature, and their behavior can be measured and often-times predicted, if one can generate the right tools. Technology in the Network Sciences field, and other related fields of Big Data analysis, will likely make or break the future growth of the US economy. The potential efficiency gains are tremendous if corporations and other institutions (hospitals, bureaucracies, etc.) undertake network planning to optimize communication flows and relinquish their commitment to inefficient Top-Down communication structures.
