Who are we? How are we defined nowadays? Well, to start off, we are defined by our actions and our peers. And nowadays most of self defining in done online. Social Networks have grown so much in the past decade that there is limit to how much we can be defined without Social Networks. The biggest Social Networking service that is most widely used is Facebook. The initial intent of SNS (social networking service) was to widen people’s social life through fast growing internet. It was first intended to be used as a tool to make our social life more comfortable. If we stop and think about it for a little, are we controlling the service or have we become slaves to the Social Networking Service.
Facebook is coming up with new updates to make Facebook “better”. It is preparing to fight head on with Google by jumping into search field. Google is still the most convenient way to find sources online but Facebook is trying change the traditional way of searching. Facebook is partnering up with various media companies such as Netflix, Yahoo, and Hulu to help people find what they need through Facebook. If Facebook succeeds in completing its goal to revolutionize searching, people will spend more time on Facebook. According to Nielsen, Americans spend more time on Facebook than with the next four largest web brands. Is it not evident that Facebook is controlling people’s online life, thus users are becoming slaves of the Social Networking Service?
It is the social data that Facebook has that makes it so powerful. Although a person cannot be defined easily through bunch algorithms, the closest way you can do so is through the person’s social data. By knowing what the person likes and what the person’s friends like, people are very accurately defined. It is so scary and sad to think we can be defined by algorithms written up by bunch of people, but it is the truth. It will be much healthier for you social life if we went up to our close fiends and talk to them instead of leaving posts on their wall.
