Canandaigua workshop, Feb. 27

From Judson Reid:

Use of Season Extension Tunnels for the Beginner Farmer and Home Gardener
Saturday, February 27, 2010
9:00 AM to Noon
Cornell Cooperative Extension, 480 North Main Street
Canandaigua, NY 14424

Extending the growing season for the production of vegetables, herbs, berries and cut flowers is attracting the attention of commercial growers and home gardeners. To accommodate this interest, Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County is hosting a workshop on the use of season extension tunnels.

Tunnel structures allow farmers and home gardeners to start plants earlier in the spring and harvest later into the fall or winter season. Crops grown under these structures out-yield conventional production and often with less disease problems. Topics to be covered include:

  • How different materials can raise or lower temperatures for tender crops – Chris Wien
  • How to grow vegetables in tunnels, including leafy greens – Judson Reid
  • Winter storage vegetables — varieties, seeding dates and storage techniques – Robert Hadad
  • Growing cut flowers in tunnels – Chris Wien

The workshop fee is $15.00 per farm operation or family. To register, contact Cornell Cooperative Extension of Ontario County at 585-394-3977 x427 or nea8@cornell.edu

  1. I was wondering how long this workshop (Cornell High Tunnels: Helping growers extend the season and improve their profits) will last. I’m not a farmer, but a home gardener who wants to learn about low tunnel gardening with the possibility of constructing a high tunnel in the future. Will this workshop be helpful to me and worth the 1.5 hour drive to get there from the Trumansburg area? Will this workshop be recorded and offered as a stream on a website at a later date?

Thanks for your help, and for your response.
