High Tunnels for Season Extension – April 3, Owego, N.Y.

Learn how to earn more income by lengthening the growing season inside tunnels, greenhouse-like structures used for growing fruits and vegetables, April 3 in Owego, N.Y. The program features:

  • Judson Reid, extension educator with the Cornell Vegetable Team, who will talk about the pros and cons of different tunnel designs.
  • Chris Wein, Cornell professor of Horticulture, who will show different ways to manage both the high and low temperatures in a tunnel.
  • Molly Shaw, South Central NY Ag Team, who will discuss low tunnels and caterpillar tunnels, low cost alternatives to high tunnels.
  • Tim Stoughton, vegetable and greenhouse grower in Newark Valley, who will talk about his first years of growing in a high tunnel.
  • Laura McDermott, Eastern NY Berry Specialist, who will help you calculate how much income a tunnel will actually earn you.

In the afternoon, visit different tunnel structures at Our Green Acres and see the spinach ready to harvest in the tunnel at Purdys Produce.

This workshop will be held at the CCE-Tioga office in Owego, NY from 9:00am-3:00pm and is free to farmer participants and includes a light lunch thanks to funds from the NY Farm Viability Institute. Please pre-register , mew58@cornell.edu, 607-687-4020.
