Food Inflation: How do I afford groceries?!

The price of food has increased, SNAP Emergency Allotments are ending, and income has remained the same. How can you afford groceries for your family? We will review a few ideas to help navigate these challenging times.

Plan your trip to the grocery store

As we learned in a recent blog, U.S. consumers waste an estimated average of 1 pound of food per person per day at home and in places where they buy and consume food away from home. Make a meal plan and create your grocery list based off your plan. Make sure to check your pantry first to avoid buying items you already have on hand. Stick to your plan to avoid food spoiling.

Find resources

There are many resources in the community to support you and your family through tough times. If you are struggling to afford food for your family, look for resources in your community to help. Resources include SNAP EBT benefits, food pantry’s, WIC, and nutrition education. For more information, contact your local Cornell Cooperative Extension office.
