Apps for Affordable Foods

There is really an app for everything nowadays! In this post, we highlight a few free apps and websites that all share in their goal to connect people to more affordable foods in their local area.

Find farms and farmers’ markets near you:
  • GrownBy: This platform connects you to local nearby small farms selling fresh produce. Farmers upload and sell their own products on the site. Find fresh vegetables, dairy products and meat listed nearby. You can also purchase food directly from the site using a debit or credit card.
  • Local Harvest: This website provides information on local farms near you, farmer’s markets, and food events (festivals, tours, workshops, field days, etc.). The website’s search and filter features allow you to specifically search for nearby farm stands, u-pick farms/gardens, grocery stores/co-ops, among many other food resources.
To save money grocery shopping:
  • Basket App: The Basket App is a useful free app to use when grocery shopping. It allows you to create and keep grocery lists on your phone, access information on the best grocery sales happening near you and compare in-store and online grocery store prices so that you can save as much money as possible grocery shopping.
  • Flashfood Grocery Deals: Flashfood is another app that alerts you to sales and savings deals happening at your nearby grocery store. Many stores heavily discount foods that are nearing their expiration date, which the Flashfood app then highlights, so make sure to stay diligent about best by dates. Flashfood also allows you to directly purchase products in the app and then pick up your order at the store.
To reduce restaurant food waste:
  • Too Good to Go: This app aims to reduce food waste by selling leftover food from restaurants, bakeries, cafes, and grocery stores for a very discounted rate. If you are looking to treat yourself by eating out but want to stick to your food budget, this app comes highly recommended for its easy to use features. Currently in New York State, the app only operates in New York City, but it is expanding every year.
