Cooking with Kids: Father’s Day Breakfast in Bed

This year, Father’s Day is Sunday, June 20th! Father’s Day is a great opportunity for kids to practice their kitchen skills. Kids can show fathers, grandfathers, and other paternal figures love through cooking. The following recipes can be prepared by kids with adult supervision. They allow kids to use toasted bread or a tortilla to make a unique and edible creation. 

Fresh PB&J Quesadilla

This first recipe is for a peanut butter and jelly quesadilla. It takes common ingredients and transforms them into a unique brunch dish. Kids can help spread the peanut butter, select the fruit, and cut the fruit with adult supervision.

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • 1 Whole wheat tortilla
  • Peanut butter
  • Fruit of choice, sliced (for example, fresh strawberries, bananas or blueberries), or jelly

Instructions:

  1. Spread peanut butter on the tortilla.
  2. Place fruit slices or jelly on half of the tortilla, and then fold the tortilla in half.
  3. Place on a large skillet and cook for a couple of minutes until golden brown.
  4. Flip, then cook another couple of minutes.
  5. Place on a cutting board and slice into wedges with a pizza cutter.

Father’s Day Portrait Toasts

The next recipe for Father’s Day is Portrait Toasts. This breakfast idea uses ingredients you already have in this house. It requires zero cooking time and allows kids to get creative in the kitchen! Kids can choose the vegetables or fruits, cut the produce with adult supervision, and decorate the toast.

Serves: 1

Ingredients:

  • Whole wheat bread
  • Spread of choice (cream cheese, hummus, etc.)
  • Vegetables and/or fruit for the face (some possibilities include peppers, carrots, cucumbers, black olives, strawberries, bananas, and orange slices)

Instructions:

  1. Chop up the fruit and vegetables into bite size pieces.
  2. Toast your bread until lightly brown.
  3. Coat with spread of choice.
  4. Create your dad’s face by placing the chopped veggies and fruit on the bread.
