GMO stands for genetically modified organism. This means the DNA of a plant, animal or other organism has been changed from its natural state in a lab.
GMOs often have a bad reputation because the genes of these plants and animals we consume are artificially changed. However, the effects of GMOs on health and nutrition have not been fully studied or understood. More research is needed to know what kind of impact they may have.
Since the effects of GMOs are unknown, some people choose to avoid them. The Non-GMO Project has created a verification process to show customers which foods have not been genetically modified. Nothing can be proven to be “GMO-free,” but having this seal means the food is less than 1% genetically modified.
What other seals have you seen on your packages?
