Most people want to grocery shop as quickly as possible. Looking at nutrition labels takes time and the information can also be confusing. It is important to understand what is on the nutrition facts label so that you can make healthy choices.
Start with the Serving Size
Compare what you actually eat to the serving size listed. If the serving size is ½ cup and you eat 1 cup, you are getting twice the calories and other nutrients.
Check out the Total Calories
Find out how many calories are in one serving. This can help you figure out how many calories that food is counting toward your total calories for the day.
An average adult woman needs between 1,800 and 2,400 calories per day.
An average adult man needs between 2,400 and 3,000 calories per day.
Just ONE 20 oz. sugar sweetened beverage has about 250 calories. For women this is 10-14% of your daily calories. For men this is about 8-10% of your daily calories!
Look at Percent Daily Values
Daily values are average levels of nutrients for a person eating 2,000 calories a day. It can tell you the percent of nutrients that a certain food is giving you. Just remember that you may need more or less than 2,000 calories per day.
High and Low Daily Values
Low is 5% or less. You should aim low in saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium.
High is 20% or more. You should aim high in fiber, vitamins, and minerals.
