Dr. Jessica Reed named Janet L. Swanson Director of Shelter Medicine

Dear CVM community,

After a national search, we are pleased to announce that Dr. Jessica Reed has been named the Janet L. Swanson Director of Shelter Medicine with the Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program. She will join us on April 15, 2024.

Dr. Reed comes to us from the Seattle Humane Society, where she served as vice president of veterinary services, and previously as staff veterinarian, medical director and chief of veterinary medicine. She also served as an adjunct professor at Washington State University. Dr. Reed earned her doctorate in veterinary medicine from Cornell in 2012, followed by time in private practice at clinics in upstate New York and the West Coast, before joining Seattle Humane in 2015. In addition to being a Fear Free Certified Professional, Dr. Reed is a certified animal welfare administrator and a 2024 American College of Veterinary Preventative Medicine exam candidate.

With over 18 years of experience in veterinary medicine, 15 of those in shelter medicine, Dr. Reed has a wealth of knowledge to offer Maddie’s® Shelter Medicine Program. Expanding the reach of shelter medicine and shelter medicine education at Cornell, where the field first took root, is an important component of our college mission, and we’re excited to follow her work in this area.

Please join us in welcoming Dr. Reed back to the College of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, we would like to thank Dr. Lena DeTar for serving so capably as interim director and for providing excellent leadership for the activities of the program.

Sincerely,

Dean Lorin Warnick

Diego Diel, Interim Chair of Population Medicine and Diagnostic Sciences
