Game Theory and Public School Applications: A necessary edge
Often, the transition from middle school to high school for many New York City students is filled with fret of where they will end up in the five borough system. Nearly 750000 students are placed in one of 426 New York City high schools. The antiquated former matching system was strenuous as students would list their preferences of five schools and, often, the higher economic students would have many options of choice where to go but the majority of the low performing low income students did not have any options. That some received surplus offers while others got none illustrated the market’s fundamental inefficiency. More recently, game theory was implemented as a deferred acceptance algorithm to have students submit their ranked school preferences and student-school pairs were matched in terms of highest ranking. The number of unmatched students significantly decreased and more students were matched with their top choices.
