Lab Environment
Collaborations and other connections with Cornell faculty.
Tudorita Tumbar is member of Cornell Vertebrate Genomics Program (http://www.vertebrategenomics.cornell.edu/ ), and a founding member and part of the executive committee of the Cornell Stem Cell Program (https://www.stemcell.cornell.edu/ ) . In particular, we collaborate with Dr. John Lis, who helped with initial ChIPSeq and GroSeq experiments, with Dr. David Shalloway a mathematician in our Department for modeling of our quantitative proliferation and lineage tracing data, Dr. Tom Brenna, an expert in mass spectroscopy and lipid regulation. We have a strong institutional bio-computational support (Dr. Qi Sun and associated scientists).
Graduate Programs and Post-doctoral Support
Cornell is recognized for world prime graduate students through our graduate fields: BMCB (http://bmcb.cornell.edu/), GGD (http://www.gendev.cornell.edu/), and BBS (http://www.vet.cornell.edu/bbs/).
Post-doctoral students in our Department have the opportunity to socialize and present their research in our ongoing seminar series. https://mbg.cornell.edu/sites/mbg.cornell.edu/files/shared/2015%20Fall%20schedule%20postdoc%20series-2.pdf
In addition, our department periodically organizes workshops and classes on career development, where we invite former Cornell graduates from different venues of science. Tudorita Tumbar organized a semester-long class on career development for PhDs in Biology in 2012.
Undergraduate Research
A strength of our research and training program is the involvement of high quality under-graduate students in research. The undergraduate students at Cornell are recognized as the top 10% College candidates around the nation. They bring substantial enthusiasm and hard work to our research team. In fact, some of our papers were initiated and first authored by undergraduate students. The under-graduates work with close guidance from graduate student and post-doctoral fellows offering opportunities for practicing mentorship and receiving substantial support with experimental implementation, that accelerates our progress.
The Department of Molecular Biology and Genetics
Our Department is very diverse and highly collaborative. We have faculty with strengths in Genetics, Chemistry, Molecular Biology, and Cell Biology working in various model systems from yeast to mouse. The graduate students are highly interactive and take initiative in starting their own collaborations, which contributes to their projects in unexpected and fulfilling ways.
