Coronavirus similarities to Contagion

Earlier this semester I went to see the showing of Contagion. I had seen this movie previously and had really liked it, so I decided to see it again. I did not think anything of it at the time, but in retrospect, its similarities, although less dramatic, to the current real world situation are staggering. It is scary to think that we are living through a movie like experience, an experience that our children will read about in history books, an experience that we surely wont forget anytime soon. We are experiencing a complete and drastic change in our society as a whole.

I simply wanted to take this post to reflect on the current situation and encourage others to share their feelings as well. Currently, I am grateful to be safely quarantined at home and i continue to maintain social distancing. I am disappointed and sad that my time at Cornell this semester has been cut short, but I feel worse for our seniors, who had their final year cut short. All in all, I am grateful for my situation, knowing that some people do not have the ability to go home in this difficult time. I hope everyone can stay safe and I can’t wait to get back to Ithaca!

Captain America in Knives Out?

On Feburary 7th, I went to the Knives Out showing. As a movie, I thought it was incredible. The story was intriguing, the acting was very good, and the directors were able to incorporate many references to pop culture as well as include scenes with real world issues in them. But beyond this, I found one piece of this movie particularly interesting, actor Chris Evans.

I have been a fan of marvel comics since I was a kid, and its safe to say that I have seen all 22 Marvel Cinematic Universe movies at least 2-3 each. In the MCU, Captain America is portrayed by actor Chris Evans. For years, the only movies I had ever seen with Evans in them were the various MCU movies that Evans was in. I actually knew nothing about Knives Out before seeing it, thus seeing Chris Evans in the movie was shocking to say the least (he’s a great actor I just wasn’t expecting it). As the movie progressed, I couldn’t shake this weird feeling that Captain America was just casually acting in some other role. For some reason, my previous knowledge of his character of Captain America seemingly clouded my ability to see him as any other character.

I thought this was super interesting. I’m curious to see if anyone else has had a similar experience with other characters who appear in two movies, one of which you may be more attached to, as I was with Evans in Captain America.
