Planting a succulent is simple, as long as you remember the 4P’s: Pick, Paint, Pot, aPpreciate (sorry I know it doesn’t start with a “p” but this is the closest I can find).

-> PickFinding the perfect succulent depends on your taste. Some people might prefer larger succulent plants while others prefer the delicate ones. I look for signs of good health in my plants: for example, greenness and thickness of leaves. In terms of aesthetics, I especially appreciate the symmetry in succulent plants. I picked a plant with many layers of leaves and I found the complexity of it to be especially beautiful.

-> Paint: No, this is not about painting the plant — it’s about painting the pot. A well-painted pot can greatly elevate the looks of your succulent. It adds in additional colors to make your plant stand out from the crowd. If you don’t know what to paint, you can get some inspiration from the Internet. Try googling “patterns” and pick one you like. It might sound funny, but I gained my inspiration from designs on guitar headstocks. Patterns don’t need to be complex: a well-chosen color palette can make the simplest design aesthetically pleasing.

-> Pot: Potting a succulent plant is no rocket science. Start by adding some soil to your pot. Once you have filled up at least 3/4 of the pot, you can make some space in the center to put the succulent in. Strengthen your plant’s stability in the pot by pushing in some soil around the plant, adding more soil, and repeat.

-> aPpreciate: Tool: Eyes. Instructions: No instructions needed.

  1. I love the creative approach you took to explain your experience planting your succulent. It stands out from the usual posts on the blog. I also enjoy the look of the patterns on the outside of your pot.

  2. I love your humor! This was such a funny post hahaha I also love your succulent pot. I love that you colored inside of your pot not just the outside. I think that creates a great depth to your pot. You should distribute your guideline to planting newbies!!
