Documenting Immigrants

This Rose Café was a great talk into immigration and what those who are illegal immigrants really feel. We have this idea in our heads that they are all scared and hiding, while most live normally day to day and can go years without being confronted with there position. The speaker was very engaging, and he was also knowledgeable. He spoke about the little things that make people open up, and how to relate to people, which are always useful skills.

Binge Drinking

I went to this Rose Café the day before I left for Spring break to go to Las Vegas and celebrate my 21st birthday. I know, the irony. It was interesting to see how alcohol had been used even since ancient times. It is a part of our society, binge drinking, but everything is good in moderation. I enjoyed that he had a group draw what we were reading on a white board. It added an extra element and made the talk more engaging and fun. Binge drinking is not the best way to drink, which I learned in this talk and quickly found out in Sin City.

Art is Cool

Have you noticed the large mural in Rose House Dining Room? The week it was being put up I was fascinated with finding out what it was for, so I decided to attend the artist conversations. I think they all had a really nice message. Everyone needs a way to express themselves, I’ll admit that once or twice I have looked down at art school. In high school, we took the job test and it said I should be a poet. My mom immediately was like you have to be able to support yourself. It was nice to see people actually be successful in such a tough field. They also had jobs that I had never thought of before for someone with an art degree. Maybe that’s what I should do next. I feel like if they had come and talked at my high school, I may appreciate art more today than I do.

Sushi YUM

I never think about how my Sushi is formed, but there is a very complicated process that occurs between the ingredients and what goes into my mouth. I originally signed up because the post said free food, and who am I to pass that up? I learned a lot that I had never even thought of before. The rice is one of the most important parts of the recipe, it must be steamed a certain amount of time and made a certain way so that it is sticky and perfect for forming sushi rolls. This event was fun, and next time I hope we can all have a go at rolling our own sushi roll.

1 down 160 to go

I had never before heard of Bhangra when this event was open, but I knew it was on the list of 161 things that every Cornellian must do, and so I packed my bags, threw on my jacket and marched up to Barton Hall. It was AMAZING! All the dancers were so skilled, and the music was fantastic. I loved how they included everyone. The fans decided the winner and they had performances from kids and alumni. The senior goodbyes were heartbreaking and touching. I am proud that Bhangra is a part of our Cornell campus, and hope to attend next year as well.

Beneath my Feet

Did you know that every room in Lyon is dedicated in memory of a person? I had no idea that my room that I have lived in for two years is here in honor of some bloke. I am living in a part of history, which makes the dorm I live in more special. Another aspect we talked about was about how well made the buildings were and how Lyon and McFadden would probably stand long after the main house had crumbled. I was speaking with a friend at dinner the other night and he said during slope day that the walls and windows were shaking, while in my room, we could barely tell that a concert was happening right outside our door. The gothics may not have air conditioning, but they are sturdy and have a large amount of historical significance, which I believe to be a lot more important.

A New Bookmaker is in Town

This seminar was great. I knew very little about Zines, but learned a lot. I learned how to put together a notebook with paper that is readily available in most stores. It is a skill I can use in the future. Soon after, I used one of my new notebooks to take notes in a interview. They are small, lightweight and easy to do. I love learning a new skill and learning about Ithaca as well. We were taught by a local Ithaca mini publisher and learned more about the world around the Cornell bubble. This was a great event that I thoroughly enjoyed and maybe I will make my own notebooks from now on.

The Refugees

What a way to spend a night back in Ithaca. This event gave a free book that a group read over winter break. The discussion was lively and there were many different view points brought up. I enjoyed discussing my favorite stories and reading the book in general. Being in class, and working leaves little time for free reading now a days, an activity that I greatly miss. I loved the excuse to read a good book and then the opportunity to talk about it with others. I thought more critically about the lives and trials of refugees, something I had little experience with personally. There was a story for everyone in this book, and I highly recommend taking the time to read it!
