WCHS Public Meeting

During this meeting I got to see photos of how the West campus landscape has changed over time. It was amazing to see the great improvements Cornell has made as they have really improved the enlargement of West sector as well as the building structure. Overall, I found the gallery very interesting as it also showed me how West Campus is going to develop in the future (primarily enlargement).

Intro to Meditation

Katie’s Meditation tutorial was fabulous. First, she provided us with a background of meditation and its history such as rooting back to even the Indian culture and its widespread later use in the Western cultures. She guided us through 2 different types of meditations. I feel the experience of following along in those meditations really has encouraged me at times to just close my eyes and visual a beautiful scenery and breathe deeply as after the Table Talk I feel I could strongly see the effects of meditation as it made me feel more calm and less stressed than usual.

Pao Bhangra!

This was my first time going and watching their dances and was something I had to do since I was a student in Cornell. I knew people from the team which made watching them dance all the more fun and enjoyable. The music and the style of dancing really brought back memories from my old heritage in Punjab and overall I felt that the dance competition really took away all the stress I was facing from my upcoming prelim 2 exams.

Fighting suicidal thoughts

Ove definitely went through a lot in life. I mean losing his wife someone he loves so deeply definitely brought trauma to him and caused him to get unstable and live a traumatic life as shown by the movie as at times he wants to end his life because of how he lost the people closest to him. However, I believe that no matter what happens in life and no matter how much we lose in life or how much life beats us down we must keep getting up and fighting back as eventually things will turn out to be better as shown by the happy ending of the movie signified by Ove’s funeral.

The evolution of technology

The movie space odyssey really showed me how powerfully humans can evolve and the dangers that come with it. I mean in the beginning there were only apes but then they learnt how to use bones as weapons and fast forward in time and we have astronauts who now are operating a machine called Hal that pretty much has its own consciousness. This is where the dangers of evolution came into play as Hal had the ability to kill the other astronauts who were asleep which tells us that with human advancement in technology the automated machines can actually endanger us which is why we must be careful of how society evolves over time and in the future.

The pain of being fired

The movie “Up in the Air” really gave me an interesting perspective of how people have to deal with getting fired. In my own life whenever say I apply to join a club I always have to face the fear of getting rejected and rejection do give my emotional pain though only for a week or so. But in this movie I got to see how getting fired which is much more striking can vastly affect people. In the film we clearly see that the actors were dedicated to their job before being fired, however, after being fired instead of having to face depression its interesting to see the idea of how getting fired gave them liberation to pursue their passion which is something that really stood out to me.

Optimism is half battle won.

When I was seeing 50/50 I was for the most time in shock just by seeing how terrible of a life people have to face when diagnosed with Cancer especially with only a 50% survival chance. However, what stood out to me was the important of being strong during such hard times as hard time come to pass and not to last (his surgery ended up being successful helping the main character lead the normal life). In my own life many a times I have faced issues such as not getting enough sleep during finals week but I made sure I fought through and never gave up and eventually things did end up getting better.

The Importance of a Father

When watching the fabulous movie black panther in the dining room what stuck the most was how important a father’s role can be in shaping a man’s identity. T’Challa the main hero of the film i.e Black Panther grew up for most of his life under the guidance of his father so in fact he was able to develop good morals and become a well respected man through what he learnt from his father. However, as a counterexample, Killmonger grew up for most of his life without his father so there was no real guidance or support to tell him that his actions towards Wakanda were wrong. This notion of how important fathers can be in shaping a person’s life is what I have strongly taken from this film as I have had friends too who have grown up without much of a fatherly presence which has affected their morals deeply.
