Finger Lakes Environment

I recently attended a Rose Cafe about the enviornment of Finger Lakes led by Andrew Zepp. It was interesting to learn about his experience in water and land conservation around the Finger Lakes area. I also learned about how heavy rainfall is bad for the lakes because all the soil gets washed into them, causing an influx of nutrients to enter the water system. This leads to the accumulation of bacteria and algae. It was also interesting to learn that the location of Wegman’s is actually pretty bad for today’s standards, since it isn’t good for the lakes around it.

BLACK PANTHER

I recently attended a Friday Movie session featuring Black Panther. As a huge MCU fan, I was excited to watch Black Panther again and analyze it a little more. Black Panther is more than just your typical Marvel movie. As one of the first American movies to feature a cast of mainly people-of-color, Black Panther broke societal norms and passed boundaries. One of the major points that I like about Black Panther is that it empowers women, showing that women can also be heroes and protect their country. I really enjoyed watching Black Panther again, and I look forward to watching it again before watching Endgame.

History: West Campus

I recently attended an event to learn about the history of west campus led by Garrick Blalock. I was always intrigued by the architecture of west campus and the gothics as well as well as the history behind their designs. It was really interesting to learn about how the gothics were inspired by English Universities (Cambridge/Oxford) and even has their crests on the buildings. Garrick also told us about Cornell’s new plans of adding new dorms in the future, since we have a shortage of rooms for future students. While this won’t impact me, I look forward to hearing what Cornell will do in the future.

AREA Method: Making Better Decisions

I recently attended a Rose Cafe led by Cheryl Einhorn about making better decisions and the AREA Method. The AREA Method is a reliable way to make sound decisions without relying on your biases. I feel that lots of the decisions that we make are clouded by emotions, and the AREA Method can be used to prevent this. Cheryl also introduced us to a couple quizzes that we can take to learn more about our personalities, as well as the advantages/disadvantages of those personality types. In the future, I intend to take these quizzes to learn more about what I can do the make good decisions.

Superbowl Sunday

As an avid watcher of all things sports, especially football, I attended this event to learn more about football trivia and betting. I didn’t know that betting in sports was such a big thing; I also didn’t know that so much thought went into it; people bet on scores, winning teams, and more. One of my favorite parts of the Superbowl are the ads. While I knew that adds were expensive, I didn’t know that they cost 1 million per 30 seconds. Attending this event made more knowledgeable about football and sports culture.

Cancer: A New Perspective

Through meeting with Jason Hungerford and talking about this experience with colon cancer, I have learned more about how to deal with family or friends suffering from bad experiences. Jason talked about using the concept of rings around you, with you being in the center of the ring and your friends/family/acquaintances stemming outward (like ripples). As the person in the center of your ring, when you seek comfort, you naturally gravitate outwards. However, a person outside of your ring should seek help outwards, not inwards.

Talking with Jason also made me realize that we should take the time to enjoy life and not focus 100% on work. This applies to school, since many people just focus on school instead of taking the time to gain new experiences and live.

What’s in the Future

Attending the Rose Cafe led by Lisa Nishii, a Japanese-American professor at the ILR School here, was very informative about her path to becoming involved in academia. During this meeting, she informed us about how she utilized her mentors and took risks to get where she is today.

Through this meeting, I became more comfortable about not knowing what I want specifically do in the future. As a food science major, I’m not sure which path I want to take in the future (product development or food safety). By meeting with Prof. Nishii, I now understand that it is okay to not know what I want to do now, and that I can work things out as they came.

Garden of drunk people

I recently went to Michael Fontaine’s Rose Cafe about the culture behind binge-drinking. It was interesting (and fun!) to learn about the history behind drinking and about bro culture. We also got the opportunity to read a translation of a latin text detailing the events occurring inside a painting. The painting was really weird, since it has pictures of  cows and goats vomiting frogs. I was initially really confused by the painting, but it reading the text definitely helped.

SUSHI

I recently attended a sushi-making demo event for Rose Cafe. It was really interesting to learn about the different types of sushi that is made by Cornell, as well as the brief history behind sushi. In the future, I really hope to use what I learned to make sushi in the future.
