Wow, what a time to be alive. I would have never thought that the President of the entire university would take time to personally meet with just a handful of students on West. The fact that she went out of her way to have dinner and chat at Rose instead of using the time to make a more public appearance where more students were gathered really shows that she is invested in the community and the individual, not just earning brownie points with the masses. And for that, hats off to you, Martha. I really respect that.
I’m really excited about her hints at a telepsychiatry service. Although I personally feel like there’s just some kind of physical human element missing from it (even though the research finds that there is no difference between telephone and in-person), I’m happy to see Cornell making efforts to meet the mental health needs of its students. Personally, I have found mental health help hard to access, whether it be because walk-in times for groups like EARS don’t match my schedule, or there’s a lack of individual appointment times with Cornell health. I think this is a step in the direction, but oh, how very many steps we will need to take to reach our destination.
I was at this event too and I too think that it was a really unique experience. I agree that I think Martha Pollack is really trying to be part of the Cornell community since she took the time to engage with students.
I agree that it will be a series of steps to get more adequate mental health care here at Cornell. I wonder how long it will take and if we will still be students here when we finally meet that goal.
