It was a great pleasure to talk to Lee Pillsbury and Yonn Rasmussen. Their experience at Cornell is similar to my experience here. I’ve met talented and kind individuals who help me to succeed and go above and beyond. But there is a few difference. One difference Yoon mentioned was the car ride in Williard Straight Hall. Students at the time posted their schedule of car availability to leave the campus on a board in Willard Straight Hall. Other students contact the driver on the board and get a ride to the destination. Currently, the students won’t have the trust to do things like this. In addition, we spoke about the recent college admission scandals and discussed whether or not legacy should have an advantage while considering admission. They confirmed that the legacy does not have an advantage while considering admission but the legacy has an advantage in terms of walking through the college application process.
I was unable to attend this event, but it sounds like you had a very engaging and interesting conversation with the trustees! I think it is so admirable and speaks well to our generation when we can engage with adults in formal conversation, especially individuals like the trustees who have a say in the financial outcomes of the college.
It is very interesting that they stated legacy status does not affect admission – I got a very different impression from President Pollock at the Rose Cafe a few weeks ago! I’m very intrigued as to which party is correct. Thanks for sharing!
