After attending the Rose Cafe talk from Lisa Nishii, I realized that it is 100 percent okay to not know what you want to do in the future. Often people are certain that the path they take will lead to certain outcomes but that is not always the case. Many people in their current professions often got there through twisted roads. Although there is pressure to decide what career path to take and what to study, people should take their time to really think about what they enjoy and what they want to do with their lives. The talk gave me the opportunity to self-reflect on my current academic path at Cornell and if it really is the path that I want to take.
I thought it was interesting to hear about how a lot of people don’t take a direct path to their careers. I also took the talk as an opportunity for self-reflection and was glad that it forced me to really reevaluate my choices and what they could mean for my future.
I totally agree that Dr. Nishii’s discussion led me to do some self-reflection. I also think that her emphasis that it is perfectly fine and good to take a not-so-straight path to a particular career destination led me to realize that taking an unconventional path can provide someone with an unconventional perspective, which at least in my opinion, is always an asset.
interest
I didn’t have a chance to attend this event, but I totally agree with what Dr. Nishii said during the discussion. I also believe that our interest can always change or develop from the current interest.
