The project works to help people make informed decisions about tackling soil contaminants in gardens, communities, and other spaces. This includes information about sources and types of contamination, soil testing, composting, and healthy garden practices in urban soils.

CCE Tompkins County Compost Resources

Here you can find fundamental information about compost and composting from the Compost Education Program at Cornell Cooperative Extension of Tompkins County. This page covers a range of compost topics including the basics and benefits of composting, home composting, outdoor composting techniques, bin selection, testing options, and uses for finished compost.

GrowNYC

GrowNYC’s Distance Learning page provides several resources about gardening, composting, and other green activities appropriate for both children and adults. On this page, you can find information on plant care, soil health, home recycling and food preservation. Click here for their book recommendations on gardening.

Urban Soils Lab at Brooklyn College

In addition their research, the Urban Soils Lab at Brooklyn College provides affordable soil testing services to communities in NYC and the greater United States. Here you can find information on how to take advantage of this soil testing service from sampling and submission of soils to interpretation and implementation of results.

Cornell Garden-Based Learning

Cornell Garden Based Learning works to provide educators with research-based gardening resources for community engagement and development. Here you can find information to facilitate garden-based learning including lesson plans, educational videos, garden guidance, and citizen science ideas. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the “JUST PLANT IT, NY!” campaign has made several resources from the CCE Master Gardener Volunteer program and Cornell Garden-Based Learning available for free.

CCE COVID-19 Guidance for Community Gardens

This page provides guidelines for reduced risk operation of community gardens during the COVID-19 pandemic. In addition to recommendations, the document includes links to relevant resources on COVID-19 and gardening from other organizations.
