Tie Stall Barn Design Considerations to Optimize Cow Comfort

Back in December 2019, CCE Regional Teams across the state hosted a Freestall and Tie Stall Cow Comfort Program. Speakers highlighted the importance of understanding what cow comfort means to producers and consumers, the economics of cow comfort and how it pays to make improvements in facilities and management to increase cow comfort, how to adequately ventilate a barn, and some key considerations in barn design. Penn State Extension’s Dan McFarland spoke about tie stall barn design considerations for optimizing cow comfort. He focused on the importance of proper stall size and design, providing adequate bedding as well as access to feed and water, and how to manage outdoor access.
