Research assistants in the Adolescent Transitions Lab develop a broad array of research knowledge, skills, and experience. This ranges from researching the academic literature and investigating methods and measures, to processing quantitative data, writing code in statistical programs, and cleaning and analyzing data. We encourage research assistants to be proactive about pursuing their research interests and offer numerous opportunities to conduct independent projects, submit posters to conferences, and write senior honors theses. In order to include all research assistants in the long-term vision and goals of the lab, we hold weekly lab meetings to discuss current projects, plan future work, and learn about topics of interest.
Research assistants in the Adolescent Transitions Lab have a wide variety of interests within the realm of developmental psychopathology. Past research assistants have submitted original research to peer reviewed publications, attended conferences, and conducted honors theses; several research assistants have gone on to work in education, clinical practice, research and attend doctoral programs in clinical and developmental psychology.
Recommended Background
Our lab is small and requires research assistants to be independent, self-motivated, flexible, and willing to learn. Successful research assistants in our lab typically have a strong and clear interest in psychological research, particularly in questions surrounding psychopathology, youth development, and puberty. As our research involves deep content knowledge and substantial statistical analyses, we seek applicants who have completed coursework in human development or psychology, research methods (e.g. HD 2830), and statistics (PSYCH 3500 preferred). While these courses are preferred, we recognize that students early on in their Cornell career may not yet have had the opportunity to take these classes and take that into account when reviewing applications.

If your application meets the requirements, you will be invited to interview. We ask accepted applicants to volunteer for their first semester in the lab for a trial run before enrolling for credit in their second semester. Most research assistants enroll in one to three credit hours for elective credit. Each credit indicates a commitment of three hours of work in the lab per week (e.g., three credits corresponds to nine hours of work in lab per week). We are a small lab and prioritize getting to know our research assistants and building a supportive research team.
