Welcome
Welcome to the Living with Leopards Project intern blog. Join us as we explore the implications of human-leopard conflict in the Himalayan foothills, reporting from Chitwan National Park, Nepal.
In Nepal, human-leopard conflict threatens food security of communities as a result of livestock loss and physical harm to both humans and leopards. The aim of this study is to understand drivers and impacts of human-leopard interactions and to generate interventions for sustainable conservation. The focus of our efforts in Nepal are three-pronged:
- Leopard diet analysis using physical and molecular methods
- Development of spatial conflict risk model for leopard-human interactions
- Exploration of social, ecosystem, and zoonotic components of human-leopard conflict through independent projects
In partnership with two national conservation champions, we seek to secure national policy commitment by developing a National Policy document to enable site-specific sustainable conflict management responses. We hope this will promote stewardship for the survival of leopards in shared landscapes without compromising human well-being.
