Alex Barbati currently works on electrokinetic interrogation and modeling of interfaces with diffuse charge. Previously, he worked on the fabrication and development of microfluidic platforms for cellular analysis.

Biography

Alex Barbati joined the Micro/Nanofluidics Laboratory in December of 2007. Prior to joining the group, Alex studied Mechanical Engineering at the University of Massachusetts Amherst from 2003-2007. While at UMass, Alex developed code to detect faults in rotating machinery using statistical methods to maximize gathered information via intelligent sensor placement. In addition to his academic experience, Alex has worked for MKS Instrument, Inc. developing products for advanced manufacturing processes. Alex is a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers, Pi Tau Sigma and SIAM.

Current Projects

Current projects include modeling of and experiments on fluid permeable diffuse-charge interfaces. Specifically, we study sulfonated fluoropolymer films and execute streaming potential and conductance measurements combined with extensive characterization of the chemical and physical state of the interface. We model transport in the system to both predict experimental outputs and identify novel regions of the experimental parameter space.
