Weak Ties

During class, we learned that strong and weak ties each have their own ways of establishing the social networks of each person. In this article by TechCrunch, they explore the impact of the strength of a tie when it comes to looking for a job. The importance of weak ties is elaborated by explaining their significance of them as bridges to other networks. An example set was the idea that over 40 percent of jobs are obtained through referrals, thus highlighting the importance of weak ties as a means of obtaining a job.

Additionally, the article makes an effort to raise awareness of the idea that diversity can be attributed to strong and weak ties of an already-diverse foundation in contrast to the strong ties of a non-diverse foundation. The example set in place explains that a non-diverse team of simply MIT and Stanford engineers is likely to only have ties to people of similar backgrounds, making it less likely for diversity to flourish. On the other hand, an already diverse founding team will have the strong and weak ties necessary to be able to encourage a more diverse environment and workforce. As a result, understanding the roles of strong and weak ties can have a positive impact on the trustworthiness of a company when it comes to its approaches to diversity.

As a result, when it comes to diversity in the workplace, many can relate to the founding members’ strong and weak ties, in addition to their efforts to improve such diversity. If they are able to recognize the importance of establishing weak ties with a more diversified network, then companies are more likely to succeed nowadays.
