Game Theory and Brexit

In David Hunt’s “Game theory expert reveals Boris’ ‘real strength’ in showdown EU talks – ‘Doing it right'”, Hunt discusses a game theory expert’s opinion on the negotiations between the United Kingdom and the EU for Brexit. The expert argues that Boris Johnson’s strength is his unpredictability. Because as we have learned in class game theory involves examining your and your opponent’s payout, being unpredictable makes it harder to negotiate against you. He explains that while this unpredictability is a strength in 1 on 1 negotiations, there are many team-oriented projects where being unpredictable would be a weakness. The example he gives is hiring a business partner.

It is interesting that Hunt makes the comparison between the pros and cons of being unpredictable. I think this can be translated back towards American politics. It is possible that President Trump benefits in international politics from his unpredictability because he is often in 1 on 1 negotiations. However, it is likely that his unpredictability hurts our country when it comes to “team-oriented” projects such as domestic policy.
