Twitter is Shutting down Vine

A few weeks ago, Twitter (who owns Vine) announced that they will shutting down the app.  The once very popular app has lost user interest by tremendous amounts.  Twitter also owns Periscope and wants to focus on improving both Twitter and Periscope.  When they announced their loss, Twitter also laid off 9% of the company’s global workforce.  Although they announced their decision, no actions will be taken immediately.  The website will be around for a while and vine users will be able to save their videos before it is too late.

Twitter cannot afford to run vine anymore.  If Twitter involved vine in more advertising, maybe the application would be able to continue to run.  If Twitter offered other companies to advertise their products on their platform, they could make a lot of money to keep up with the application.

The downfall of Vine popularity is due to the Triadic Closure Property.  If two people are active on Vine, then their mutual friends will be inclined to make and use a Vine account.  Having three nodes with positive edges validates the Triadic Closure Property, and increases the popularity of Vine.  Also, as in the case Vine was dealing with, if two friends do not like or use Vine, their mutual friend is not going to want to become an avid user.  This causes an issue and generates disinterest in an application.
