Voter turnout at 20-year low in 2016

The voter turnout in this election turns out to be the lowest in past 20 years. Possible reasons may include that these two candidates are both too bad for voters to vote for, or their policies do not differentiate heavily in major parts for voters to be willing to make a difference.

I suspect there is a cascade effect going on with election. If you know many people around are voting for one of the candidate, would you vote or not for that candidate? However, many people noticed a interesting phenomenon during this election. If one looks at social media, most of them are calling for voting for Hillary. Even in school, most people around who talks about the election mostly support Hillary. However, the final result of the election is actually in favor of the silent majority. In this case, people are not influenced by the effect of information cascade, but vote for who they think will bring beneficial effects to them.
