Information Networks Can Reinvent Recruiting

As if recruiting was not stressful enough for job applicants, graph databases are on pace to change the way applicants are judged. “How Graph Databases Can Reinvent Recruiting” discusses the new concept of classifying candidates based on their relationships with others, their background, specific skills and even their hobbies and interests. The idea is to use this information to determine whether or not a potential employee would have a cultural fit for the position he is applying to.

This concept relates directly to what we are learning about information networks and the worldwide web. The fact of matter is that computing and information is becoming increasingly networked. For example, “How Graph Databases Can Reinvent Recruiting” explains that social networks such as LinkedIn, Facebook, and Twitter are built on a different kind of database that fundamentally tracks relationships. This principle of modeling data as a network, would make recruitment a thousand times more efficient by collecting existing data sets and using that information to create an extensive graph network that would be able to track candidates based on their relationships with others, their background, specific skills and even their hobbies and interests to see if they have cultural fit for the position that they are applying to.

Furthermore, in class we discussed how search engines have used ideas relating to power and centrality in networks, and how they have implemented network-based matching markets for selling advertising. This same idea applies to a network based recruiting database where recruiters can use information such as interests and hobbies to proactively approach individuals for roles that the potential applicant has a high “value” for. Once this system becomes a prominent tool, network based recruiting will be able to optimize the workforce.
