Asbestos Abatement-Basement Level

From December 21st through January 15th there will be another series of asbestos abatements in Olin Library, in the basement stack area corridor (to the east of the abatement outlined above, along the same column lines, up to the east stairwell), in the southeast corner of room B17 (Maps), in the northeast corner of B18 and along the north wall of B19 (Desktop Services). The abatements in B17, B18, and B19 will be completed by January 4; the stack abatement may not be completed until January 15th.

  • Beginning on or about December 21st the contractor will prepare the basement stack area for the abatement, likely blocking the entryway to the stacks from the west-end elevator/stairwell lobby. Again the Library will need to create and posts signs directing patrons and staff re an alternate means to get to the stacks. The contactor has until January 15th to complete this work.
  • Email notices will be sent to pertinent staff to notify when the abatement work in the stacks has been completed so that collections, reading tables, etc., can be put back into place.
  • Beginning December 23rd or 24th the contractor will begin to prepare, B17, B18, and B19 for those abatements. The contractor has until early morning January 4th to complete those abatements, allowing staff and patrons full use of  those areas starting at 8AM on Monday, the 4th.
  • Tom Cotton and Ron Clark will assist the staff in B17 and B18 and B19, if necessary, in organizing the moves to accommodate the asbestos abatement. Those spaces will need to be cleared by the end of the day on Thursday, December 24th (obviously, this preparation work can be down before December 24 based on people’s schedules given the holiday break). Tom and Ron will work with Mike Swartwout and Sue Drew to determine whether PDC laborers are required for any of these preparations. Please contact Tom and Ron for book trucks, boxes, etc.
  • Again Mike Swartwout and Sue Drew will arrange for an electrician and a worker from the Control Shop to provide temporary electrical power, and to shut off certain ventilation fans for the abatement. Tom Cotton and/or Ron Clark will be the contact for these workers in Olin.

Note that Desktop staff in B19 will be able to access their offices along the south wall over the break, if necessary. The abatement will be confined to the north wall in B19 and will be totally enclosed within temporary plastic walls during the abatement.
