Changes to the Continuing Student Aid Application Process

The Continuing Student Financial Aid Application for 2011-2012 is now available.

As you complete your renewal application this year, please keep in mind the following:

  • FAFSA and PROFILE information must be based on 2010 actual income figures, so file 2010 parent and student tax returns as soon as possible.
  • Cornell’s application contains federal verification information, so you must complete your FAFSA before completing the Continuing Student Financial Aid Application.
  • You should send all of your paper application documents to the College Board’s IDOC* service under your IDOC cover sheet. The College Board will contact you about getting your cover sheet.
  • Non-custodial parent documentation is no longer required for returning students. If we calculated a contribution for your non-custodial parent last year, we will carry forward that contribution amount, in line with Cornell’s cost of attendance. If financial circumstances have changed for your non-custodial parent, s/he may submit the Noncustodial Parent’s Statement and 2010 tax returns to our office.
  • Summer Savings Expectation amounts are: $3080 for Sophomores, $3,220 for Juniors, and $3,450 for Seniors.

*with the exception of any non-U.S. tax returns. Please send non-U.S. tax returns directly to Cornell.

The deadline to apply is May 2, 2011. Applications postmarked after this date are subject to late penalties.

where should I mail the 2011-2012 Continuing Student financial aid application? IDOC or financial office at Ithaca?

    thanks

  • Ruth Torres

You should send all of your paper application documents (except non-US tax returns) to the College Board’s IDOC service under your IDOC cover sheet. Please send your Cornell Aid App to IDOC.

  • Amar

If it should be mailed to IDOC then why does the 2011-2012 Continuing Student financial aid application says the Due Date post mark May 2, 2011?

  • Ruth Torres

It needs to be sent to IDOC by that date.

all this talk of college board contacting us about a cover sheet..this has not happened yet, and if you go to the board sight, they produce last years cover sheet…any idea when the new cover sheet is available, and if we need to go after it, or if, as you say, college board will inform us…thanks

  • Laurel Ariev

I have already submitted my IDOC documents without the Cornell continuing student financial aid form since it was not listed on the IDOC site. Where should I send this form?

  • kathleen sexton

Can you tell me the estimated cost of attendance for 2011-’12 for an undergrad living off campus. Does this cost figure include housing?

  • Ruth Torres

    Kathleen,
Estimated cost of attendance figures are available on our website here. The allowance for housing is included even if you live off campus.

  • Ruth Torres

    Laurel,
You will need to send your Cornell application to our processing center directly.
The address is 349 Pine Tree Road, Ithaca, NY 14850.

All of my parent’s income was from a foreign country in 2010. Thus a foreign W-2 was issued. However, the U.S. tax return was filed with the foreign W-2.
Should the foreign W-2 be sent to IDOC or to Ithaca
    financial aid office?

  • Mary

    Ruth,
Why does the IDOC requirement NOT indicate a need for including the Cornell continuing student finanacial aid application?
It seems including something (as you direct)in the IDOC package that is not requested would increase the likelihood that the IDOC submission is deemed unacceptable.
    Please clarify. Thanks.

  • Ruth Torres

Jeff, send the foreign W2 with your IODC packet.

Mary, the IDOC cover sheet should include a check box for institutional documents. The Cornell Continuing Student Application is considered an institutional document and this is the box that should be checked when submitting the packet to IDOC.

  • Mary

Does Cornell have a fee waiver code for the CSS Profile application that can be used to reduce the cost of submitting this application? Please! đŸ™‚

  • Ruth Torres

    Hi Mary,
Unfortunately, Cornell does not participate in the fee waiver code program for the CSS PROFILE. For low income families, the fee is waived automatically by the College Board. If you don’t qualify for that fee waiver, you must pay the fee.

I just completed the 2010 taxes and am in the process of completing the financial aid forms. Did I somehow miss an Idoc deadline?

  • Ruth Torres

    The deadline is May 2.

  • Liz

Please indicate ON the Cornell Financial Aid application that it is submitted with the IDOC packet, and that the corresponding oval by ‘Institution Specific Document(s)’ is filled in on the IDOC coversheet. That would save us a lot of confusion.

  • John

My IDOC requirements did not ask for a federal verification worksheet. Do I still need to submit a verification worksheet? Is this worksheet required for all Cornell students? Thanks.

  • Ruth Torres

    John,
not all students are selected for federal verification, but since much of the information is the same on the continuing student application, we have combined them. That way, if you are selected for verification, and you have filled out the continuing student application correctly, there is no need to complete a separate form.

  • Susan

Some forms say they can be filed electronically but to do this you would have to type in the signatures and you cannot type them in. Also, why does the Students non filer statement say to mail it to ithaca but it is supposed to be sent to IDOC with other information and this is not how it is instructed on the students to do list. This is very confusing

  • Charles Cramton

I have 2 children at CU and am doing all the fin aid forms. When will I (we) find out if we need to provide a federal verification for either of them? Do they get the notification?

  • Ruth Torres

    Susan,
some forms require an ink signature, so you may need to fill it out electronically, print, sign, and submit. Some documents, like the non-filer statements, are to be used by returning and new students, so the directions for submission are general.

Each population applying for aid should follow instructions on the APPLYING FOR AID pages on our website. https://www.finaid.cornell.edu/apply/

    Charles,
Students are selected for verification and are notified of their selection AFTER they complete a FAFSA. Continuing students do not need to complete a separate verification form because the information is included in the Cornell application.

  • John

I just want to let you folks know that you’re doing a great job. I just completed the 2010 taxes and am in the process of completing the financial aid forms and your office has been very helpful with all my questions.

  • Ruth Torres

    Thanks, John!

  • Noriko Yoshizawa

To where should I send Non US tax forms, IDOC or Cornell?
IDOC cover sheet includes ” other signed 2010 Non-US tax return’, but Cornell web site says *with the exception of any non-U.S. tax returns. Please send non-U.S. tax returns directly to Cornell.
    I am confused. Thank you.

  • Charles Cramton

Ruth: Thank you. So no need to complete the Federal verification worksheet. Good. However, will it be a problem with IDOC if we don’t submit it since it is on the IDOC cover sheet list?

  • Ruth Torres

    Noriko and Charles,
When in doubt, follow the university’s instructions for the application process.

non-US tax returns should be sent to Cornell. Due to limitations in our own system, we don’t have a way to load and track non-US tax returns.

The IDOC cover sheet lists many items, not all of which are requirements. The College Board is just trying to cover all bases. If you want to fill in the cover sheet boxes for both Institutional Documents and Federal Verification, that is fine, since both are included in the one form. At the very least, the box for Institutional Documents should be checked.

  • Samantha

I never received my cover sheet from the College Board.
When I was trying to print one out from the website, I had to enter IDOC ID. What is IDOC ID? How do I get one?

  • Ruth Torres

    Samantha,

You only need 2 of the 3 qualifiers to access your cover sheet. If you don’t know your IDOC ID (most students don’t), you can enter your SSN and date of birth.

  • Rajesh

Please help !! The deadline is just two working days away!! My daughter is a third year Cornell Student. She just submitted her CSS profile to Cornell viaCollege Board, and paid the $25 fee. The College Board did not provide her with an IDOC number after she paid the $25 since there was nothing in the application to distinguish “continuing students” who need to submit via IDOC, and new students who do not. When she entered the SSN and data of birth, the IDOC page indicated that it did not recognize her social security number. Evidently, the college board site cannot distinguish between new students and continuing students. The deadline is within a few days, and I am unable to access the cover sheet or get an IDOC ID even though the CSS profile has been submitted and paid for.

  • Ruth Torres

    Rajesh,
I will be contacting you directly to get more details on the issue.

  • Bob D.

When will 11-12 decisions be available? I have not seen dates beyond the May 2 application deadline.

  • Ruth Torres

    Bob,
Continuing student aid notifications are sent June-August.
