Welcome
Why are we doing this blog? Because we believe in transparency; we want to talk to you about what we do, and we want you to ask us questions. We promise you direct and honest responses. In order to create an environment of good conversation, we ask that your comments be respectful and appropriate. At Cornell, one of our core beliefs is “freedom with responsibility”; this means that we welcome comments that reflect all perspectives, but we ask that you act responsibly in expressing your beliefs.
If you are an applicant to Cornell, we want you to know that your comments will not be linked to your admissions or financial aid application.
We want to hear from you, so…let the conversation begin
Hi. I just wanted to know that if your a canadian citizen living and residing in Pakistan do we fill out the international application for financial aid or the one for Canadian Citizens?
Madiha Boolani – If the student is a Canadian citizen, the student is eligible to apply for aid with the application for Canadian Citizens.
I graduated from Cornell in 1977 and my daughter is currently a high school junior. Can you tell me the tuition for the state colleges vs. the private colleges within Cornell? We are not New York State residents. Thank you.
Hi Estelle,
For the 2009-2010 academic year, there will be no difference in the non-NY resident tuition rates for contract colleges vs. endowed colleges. For more detailed information, visit the “Costs” section of our website. http://finaid.cornell.edu/costs/
A relative was recently accepted but he and his family didn’t realize the financial aid papers should have been filled out prior to receiving the acceptance. Thus, they are unsure now if they will be able to afford to send their child there. Can a recently accepted freshman still apply for financial aid?
Lauren,
yes a freshman can apply for aid at any time. However, there is no guarantee an aid decision will be ready by the deposit deadline. Your relative may have to make a decision about Cornell without knowing what the aid package looks like.
hi.i am an indian student and i want to apply for spring tranfer admissions.can you tell me what do i require for the admission process?thanks.deviyani
What is the maximum number of credits you can take as a freshman per semester?
I am a Canadian Citizen. My son is currently attending high school (grade 12 in september) and he is strongly determined to get into Cornell University. Two years ago, I had to close down my business and am currently still searching for a new business. So for the past 2 years, we haven’t been getting any source of income. We are planning to put Cornell first on the list for early decision admission, but I was just wondering whether financial aid was still available for canadian students.
Thanks in advance
I’m a parent of an undergrad. How do I get a Plus Loan?
Someone from your Board was talking to my husband (an alum)and told him about tuition free admittance to Cornell if income is less than $60,000. Is this true? What are the parameters?
Patricia,
Cornell is committed to eliminating the parent contribution for families with total incomes* of less than $60,000 and total assets of less than $100,000.
*total family income includes noncustodial parent income (if applicable) and any untaxed income, such as contributions to tax deferred plans.
How do I download financial adi application and non-filer’s form?
Catalina,
You can get the forms directly from our website under the forms section. Here’s the link: https://www.finaid.cornell.edu/forms/20102011forms.cfm
When will financial aid decisions be released for current students?
Cecilia,
For continuing students who had their application materials in on time, we will begin notifying them of their aid awards by the week of May 24.

I have applied to Cornell (School of Engineering) under the ED guidelines. While going through my final version of common application, I spotted a few errors in my essays. Unfortunately, my father submitted my application before I could revise those errors. They are very minute typing errors but I intend to fix them. Is there any way I can send my revised versions of my essays?
Any help on this subject will be highly appreciated.
i have already applied under regular decision, with my first-choice school as engineering and second-choice arts and sciences. I just realized i need to take a science subject test for engineering (i already took 2 other ones) but i can’t take it until jan. 22, well past the application deadline. Can I switch engineering with another school (i know i would probably have to write another essay) or maybe just apply to arts and sciences and not do the first- and second-choice option?
May a student borrow money to supplement his families’ expected contribution even though Cornell’s policy is to not include loans in financial aid?
Dave,
Yes. Families may choose to borrow from a federal or private lender to finance the expected family contribution.
