Value of Manure Project – Join Us!

Many of you have seen the photo below presented during winter meetings by Dr. Quirine Ketterings.  The Nutrient Management Spear Program recently received funding to replicate this study across multiple farms in New York. Before you or your farmer cooperators/clients finish spreading spring manure … we’d LOVE to have more farms join us in this study.  Please see the description of the project and protocol and then please reach out if you are interested so we can help get your site enrolled.  A short description is below, and as always feel free to reach out with questions to either Quirine or Kirsten.

Manure has all seventeen essential nutrients and can increase crop yield beyond what can be obtained with fertilizer alone. In this project, we evaluate the nitrogen fertilizer replacement value (how much N can we credit?) and yield differences from the appropriate use of manure in grain and silage corn. This project is funded by New York Farm Viability Institute (NYFVI) and the Northern New York Agricultural Development Program (NNYADP). We are looking for farmer participants for the 2022 growing season, so let us know if you can implement this experiment on your farm.

Contacts: Quirine Ketterings (qmk2@cornell.edu) and Kirsten Workman (kw566@cornell.edu).
