Beef Producer’s meeting, Oneonta, NY. Feb 9.

Beef Marketing Meeting

Cornell Cooperative Extension of Schoharie and Otsego Counties is sponsoring a meeting to promote a new Cornell program to get better prices for feeder calves sold. Cornell University Beef Specialist, Mike Baker will present this initiative. He has trained Cooperative Extension Educators to grade and select appropriately sized animals to pool for sale to attract premium prices.  The program is underway across New York. According to the 2012 census, Otsego, Chenango, and Delaware are among the top eight New York beef growing counties. Many of our feeder calves go directly to auction with little control over prices received. This program can improve profitability, and grow our beef production and rural economy.

Dr. Bill Johnson, owner and lead veterinarian of Leatherstocking Veterinarian Services will discuss vaccination strategies for beef animals.  The meeting will be held February 9, 2015 at 7 p.m. at the Oneonta St. Mary’s Parish Center gymnasium, 38 Walnut Street, Oneonta, NY.  There will be time reserved to answer other beef production questions, and consider future programming ideas.  A year ago, 60 regional producers came to a meeting which presented the Adirondack Grazers Cooperative. Several local growers joined that initiative. This Cornell program is a different, less formalized opportunity to get better prices for feeder calves.
